Bulletproof capability and bulletproof rating of bulletproof vests

1. There are international differences in the standards for the protective performance of bulletproof vests, among which the standards of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) of the United States are widely referred to.
2. According to the NIJ standard, the protection capability of bulletproof vests is divided into six grades: Grade I, Grade IIA, Grade II, Grade IIIA, Grade III, Grade IV, with increasing grades implying increased protection capability.
3. Level IIIA protection is able to withstand 9mm handgun bullets, which have a typical velocity of about 420m/s, and provides a moderate degree of protection. 4.
4. Level IV is the highest level of protection and applies to vests equipped with special ballistic inserts that can withstand the impact of fragmentation from AK-series rifle fire and grenade explosions, and even armor-piercing bullets from rifle rounds of 7.62mm and lower calibers.
5. Most countries require body armour to be at least level IIIA to provide protection against handguns and miniature submachine guns. Body armor above level IIIA is usually equipped with additional ballistic inserts and therefore weighs more.
